Geophysical Instruments

A need arose to develop a new technology in the facade of geotechnical instrumentation for non-destructive, real-time detection and mapping of the extent of a subsurface contamination plume, the direction of migration in addition to the possible risks of groundwater contamination. The same instrument was required to be proficient in determining in situ progress of remediation measures and ultimate success upon conclusion of remediation operations. To achieve this, SupaZorb set about to research, source, evaluate and eventually harness the most advanced confluence of composite geotechnical apparatus available on the market. Magnetic conductivity-resistivity technology, with its magnetic susceptibility, proved here to be the most effective geotechnical instrument.

A series of software programmes were trialled in addition, with the Surfer program being distinguished as the only software capable of real-time conversion of data to colour-coded or pseudo-colour imagery to indicate hypsometric contours that correspond with conductivity and resistivity values. All matter comprises of certain properties of conductivity and resistivity with corresponding values. These values are applied in Surfer software algorithms for real-time conversion into the pseudo-colour images, which our experts can then interpret from printouts. The imagery can further be rendered in various three-dimensional formats to either represent the mapped subsurface area in its entirety or in vertical and horizontal cross sections accompanied by precise GPS co-ordinates with measurements for dimension both laterally and in depth

The geotechnology has been applied successfully in the field as a decided capacity multiplier in the planning and remediation of localised to more extensive soil and groundwater contamination at various sites. SupaZorb has in this time, vastly developed its levels of competence in wielding this technology.
